Why Storypie exists
Reading scores are at a 30-year low. Screen time is at an all-time high. Teachers are burning out.
Screen-optional learning that kids actually retain, paired with AI-powered tools that give teachers their evenings back. Audio-first. Age-banded. Standards-aligned. Ad-free.
Our Story
It all began in Cleveland, Ohio, with Jaikaran Sawhny—a father and passionate innovator who envisioned a way to seamlessly blend play and education.
As a father watching his own children navigate screen time, Jaikaran saw an opportunity: what if technology could make learning feel like play? What if kids could meet Albert Einstein, explore ancient Rome, or discover how airplanes fly—all through stories told in a voice they trust?
This vision grew into Storypie, launched in 2025 by a dedicated team of educators, artists, engineers, and AI specialists. Together, we built a platform with two powerful modes: Learn & Explore (educational first-person stories) and Create (personalized adventures). Available in 27 languages and designed for ages 3–12, Storypie turns screen time into growth time.
Our Approach
First-Person Learning, Age-Banded Design, Comprehension Built-In, and Multilingual by Default.
-
First-Person LearningBiographies, inventions, places, and events are narrated as if the subject is speaking—clear, engaging, and memorable.
-
Age-Banded DesignContent tailored for 3–5, 6–8, 8–10, and 10–12, so every learner gets the right context and vocabulary.
-
Comprehension Built-InGentle, age-appropriate questions reinforce understanding and spark family conversation.
-
Multilingual by DefaultText and audio in 27 languages support global families, bilingual households, and language learners.
Impact, backed by research
Audio as a gateway
In 2024, 42.3% of 8–18s enjoyed listening (vs 34.6% reading for pleasure), with many saying audio helps them imagine and understand — useful amid declining reading-for-pleasure. See: National Literacy Trust (Jan 2025, summary); Guardian context (Nov 2024)
Retrieval practice strengthens memory
Our built-in comprehension prompts leverage retrieval practice, a technique shown to enhance long-term retention in classroom-relevant tasks. See: Karpicke et al. 2016 (open access); Karpicke 2017 review (ERIC PDF)
Dialogic reading grows language
When adults and children talk during stories, kids gain vocabulary, narrative understanding, and verbal fluency. See: Reading Rockets: Dialogic Reading; WWC evidence (PDF)
Bilingual shared reading supports development
Families commonly draw on both languages while sharing books; research highlights language and cultural benefits. See: Bilingual families study (open access); Quirk 2024 review (abstract)
Stories help build empathy
Systematic reviews connect children's storybook reading with empathy-related outcomes and prosocial behavior. See: Kucirkova 2019 (open access); Ciesielska et al. 2025 meta‑review (PDF)
How we teach
(a peek under the hood)
Plate Tectonics — Big idea
Ages 6–8
I'm a secret power deep inside the Earth. Imagine the whole world is a cracked eggshell, and the big pieces slowly drift on the gooey inside. When pieces bump, they push up mountains; when they slide past, the ground can shake. For a long time people didn't know I was here, but I left clues — edges that look like they could fit together and matching fossils found on far-apart coasts. Hello — I'm Plate Tectonics, the busy puzzle-mover changing Earth all the time.
Ages 10–12
The ground feels solid, yet I am the quiet power that lifts mountains millimeters per year and widens oceans inch by inch. Sometimes stored energy releases in a sudden shudder — an earthquake — reminding you the surface is not one unbroken shell. Look closely at a world map: coastlines echo each other because the puzzle was once whole, its pieces still drifting today. I am the planet's slow, powerful heartbeat — Plate Tectonics.
